DRAWING THE WATER 2012
A % For Art Public Art Project for Milltown, Co. Kerry
Drawing The Water commissioned by Kerry County Council, was a year long socially engaged art project culminating with a limited edition HDV and accompanying artist’s book, made in response to a public water scheme in Milltown, Co. Kerry in the south east of Ireland. Known locally as The Spout the water scheme dates back to 1860. At this post Famine time many social developments were being engineered by the local landlords, in this case The Godfrey Family from Kilcolman House were instrumental in the channeling of clean, free water from source to its present site in Spout Lane.
This inconspicuous public water scheme became more than it’s obvious function. It operated as a multi scaled device whereby the individual not only “drew” the physical water from The Spout but it became a receptacle for sharing information located in the local / global nexus at a time when emigration was strong.
